The Strategic Initiatives Group is a corporate analyst team that provides competitive and strategic insights and vendor partner recommendations to senior management of the company. Nicole joined Jack Henry & Associates in 2017 bringing over 15 years of marketing and research experience in the financial services industry. Her prior work experience includes serving in senior marketing management roles for large credit unions with community, military, and state employee fields of membership and providing advisory services for leading financial services providers in the U.S. such as LifeLock and Intuit.

In a digital world, how long will cash remain king?

Two recent headlines got me thinking about cash. While I can appreciate the feel of a crisp new Benjamin, I don’t carry a lot of cash or use it often. Most of my cash is used for tipping or paying for the occasional home repair. I have no shame using plastic for small purchases which really annoys my husband (he’s a Brit).

Views about cash are personal and cultural. My husband, who grew up in the U.K., prefers cash over plastic for most everyday purchases. What we do agree on is the annoyance of coin. When we get it, we drop it into a giant Erdinger glass and feed our local Coinstar machine once a year.

Big Techs like Amazon are already delivering seamless, simple, intuitive experiences, and as they continue to raise the bar for consumer expectations, it’s hard for community banks and credit unions to keep pace. While financial institutions may not have the fun factor of online shopping or content streaming, they still have an opportunity to create delightful and contextually relevant experiences by revving their marketing engine with artificial intelligence (AI).
