Traditionally many financial institutions offered lockbox services because they had to, not because they wanted to; and usually only to secure a high profile loan or depositor.  This approach rarely works (whether it be for lockbox or any other venture).  It is not by accident that many of the articles published on this blog focus on customer service as the strength of a community institution, and is often directly related to the community it helps create.

During my initial training as a student pilot, there was one maxim from my flight instructor that has stood out above all: “If you are not doing something, you are doing something wrong.”  Inaction can often lead to undesirable results (including, as a pilot in training, not being able to use the airplane again).

My father is a Director of Photography with over 40 years of experience working in film and television. Growing up in the “industry” allowed me the unique opportunity to become a lighting film crew member for several films, including “My Best Friend’s Wedding” with Julia Roberts and “Hoffa” with Jack Nicholas and Danny DeVito (and to date was the best part-time job I have ever had). Fortunately, this was not a position that was simply given to me, and I had to earn and learn my way from the ground up.

Back office…when did we get a back office, I thought we outsourced? Even though most of the transaction processing for financial institutions has moved to electronic, there is still a lot of paper being utilized today.Whether your institution’s item / check processing runs in-house, is hosted through a data center, or is handled by a hybrid model (a common mixture of locally installed software, and outsourced operations), a little refinement can go a long way.You cannot completely automate customer service, but you can automate many processes to better serve these customers.
