We are an extremely mobile society. Most of us own multiple mobile devices: phones, tablets, and wearables; and as customers, we are accustomed to interacting with retail businesses via a mobile device. Traditional forms of banking technology and delivery channels don’t completely satisfy this customer preference, but the good news is that changes in the banking industry and bankers’ eagerness to adopt new technology are beginning to bring about a new and exciting era.

"Omni Channel” vs “Best of Breed”

The world of mobile technology and app based technology has completely changed the way all of us obsessively monitor our phones.  Let’s be honest, some of us spend as much time “playing” with our phone as we do working on it.  These app based technologies have changed travel, social media, news, and entertainment.  Financial Services and banking have also been affected by this radical change. I will not fall victim to spending my blog post talking about ApplePay, but let’s be honest … it is stealing the payments headlines and looks like it will continue to do so for a while.  Financial services, payments, and bank and credit union technologies companies are being pushed into an API based environment, where they control everything in the user experience versus the standard single sign on to the technology provider, regardless of how elegant their new “look and feel” is.  The bigger question is, how do these companies compete in this world of technology where they are asked to be behind the scenes and can’t differentiate what they do.

The community banks and credit unions have always been fighting “the good fight” for customers/members. Providing a viable online and mobile solution has been the recent focus for most FIs fighting to compete. These banks and credit unions are competing against the Chases and Bank of Americas of the world. Some of these FIs don’t have the annual budget that these large guys have in one month. But there is a bigger fish out there that both the community banks, credit unions, and big FIs should be worried about.

Let’s first absorb a few fun facts about cash.

Tom Harper, president of the ATM Industry Association:

“In our research we’ve found that cash use is actually growing in the United States and around the world, and it’s not just growing, but growing at an increasing rate. Just a few years ago it was increasing at 3 to 4 percent. Last year it increased 6 percent. And with mobile payments exploding, it’s almost counterintuitive.”

Today's Teller - Brains? Brawn? Or Both?

Any of you that have read my postings before know that I like to look at the history of a subject before exploring it.  When exploring the history of what we know as the teller (derived from the old English word meaning to count), I was surprised that this role dates all the way back to late 14th and early 15th century Italy.  To my further surprise, with adjustments for technology, the basic responsibilities were the same in 1413 as they are in 2013.

Banking online using an iPhone or Android to check account balances, pay bills, and deposit checks is a current hot topic of discussion in many board rooms. Consumers and businesses are quickly migrating banking tasks away from the traditional brick and mortar branch to more convenient on-demand, 24/7, bank anytime-anywhere services that fit today’s fast paced lifestyles. A recent study conducted by the Independent Community Bankers of America (ICBA) revealed that more than twice the number of community FIs now offer mobile banking compared to just two years ago. Plans to implement mobile banking by 2014 are expected by 44 percent of the community banks polled. But, for many FIs this is a challenging time. Keeping up with competition to quickly deploy services like mobile banking may create strategic challenges and short change existing processes and standards.
