The Interconnected Future of Open Banking

Over the next year, European Union Member States will be scrambling to implement the revised Payment Services Directive (PSD2) which goes into effect in January 2018. In a nutshell, PSD2 is an EU directive that will require all banks operating in Europe to expose customer account data for retrieval and provide payment services for use by authorized external entities. These Third Party Providers will be empowered to retrieve customer account information as well as initiate payments directly to bank systems if their customer provides them the authorization to do so. European banks are now on the hook to develop and provide programmatic interfaces (API’s) for outside organizations to tap into, whether the banks like it or not.

The Payment Interfaces of the Future

How users will interact with systems in tomorrow’s digital society will be very different from what we are all familiar with today. Although touch screens, monitors and keyboards will remain relevant, new types of interfaces will emerge that will alter how we interact with devices and may radically impact how payments are made. 

Here are a few emerging interfaces that I think could become important in the payments arena. Some may seem far-fetched, but the technology is already in place to make all of them a possibility. In my opinion, these revolutionary interfaces could enter our everyday lives sooner rather than later, and they may play a more important role than you might think.

Who's Putting on Payments?

Wearable technology is all but certain to become a big factor in how people interact with the world around them.  And, with the Apple Watch scheduled to begin shipping later this week, this evolution seems likely to happen very quickly.  Of interest to banks and credit unions, experts expect payments to be one of the applications particularly suited to wearable devices.  Obviously, the Apple Watch will support Apple Pay, but other key players are also jumping in to extend their payment offerings to wearable devices.  For instance, Jawbone just announced that their Up4 fitness tracker bracelet will support NFC payments through a partnership with American Express.
